A report into how Working With Children checks can more strongly protect children was recently released by the Royal Commission Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. The report recommends that these checks be standardised right across Australia, and be simpler (for example, so people are either cleared to work with children or not, rather than be abe to work with children under various conditions). It also recommends that Working With Children Checks should be more widely required, including in religious organisations, and that information should be shared nationwide so people who might work with children can be checked more rigorously, easily and quickly. Marillac welcomes this report and strongly supports a comprehensive national system to protect children. This Royal Commission web page has the report and more information about its inquiry.
